The following are the gardens on the 2009 tour:
Sue and Duff Meyer
The garden around the home has been growing for the past 10 years when the first bed was planted in the middle of the yard and has continued to grow until the latest addition in 2008 of the Children’s Garden. A variety of hostas, hellebores (lenten rose), and various shade plants create a peaceful setting in the woodland shade garden. As you walk through the pool gates, you will see the herb garden and various pots of annuals, perennials and grasses. Continue on to the Children’s Garden which is only in the second year. Neighbor children and grandchildren have painted stepping stones and planted perennials, annuals, bulbs, and vegetables as they learn about gardening. Don’t miss the rose garden tucked behind the white corner fence and the huge oak tree in the back yard (you might try to reach around it). Take your time and enjoy.
The Welcome Sign Garden, junction of Washington Street and US 41 West
MBRC beautifies Marquette’s west entrance. In October 2004, using the environmentally friendly process of “lasagna gardening,” in which layers of newspaper were used, created the bottom foundation. The garden was prepared by Patti Spengler, Barb Kelly, and Lynette Schneider, with landscape designer, Linda Andriacchi, helped with the layout of the garden. Daffodils were planted to welcome spring to Marquette. Different varieties of perennials are planted. The garden is maintained by Committee members. Second graders from Cherry Creek Elementary School annually plant the lovely annuals that add color. PLEASE PARK IN THE PARKING LOT located to the east on Washington Street.
Messiah Lutheran Church
The Messiah Prayer/Memorial Garden is a beautiful, sunny perennial garden with some added annuals. The garden was started in the summer of 2003 by members of the church who wanted to create a quiet, private outdoor space for relaxation and meditation. It has been supported by Meister Showplace and Greenhouse, the Girl Scouts, the Thai House, and many other memorial donations. Enjoy the peacefulness of this garden.
Dianne Patrick and Mark Mitchell
This garden is on a city lot and was designed to make it bird friendly and food friendly, with many vegetable plants and fruit trees. The front yard is a mature perennial garden, densely packed with plants. Shrubs have recently been added to attract birds. Each year neighborhood leaves are mulched which helps enhance the soil and keep down weeds. This garden will be the location for desserts and beverages, as guests take a few minutes to relax, meet new gardening friends, and have refreshments.
Peggy and Paul Anderson
The garden was started 10 years ago and remains a work in progress. The first bed was along the fence: seven fruit trees were planted at the birth of a grandson and roses were added at the birth of a granddaughter. In June 2007, for the daughter’s wedding, a water pond was added to the back yard. Hydrangeas and peonies and other perennials make up most of the garden. Each year dahlias and annuals are included. Please take note of the limelight tree and the double mock orange.
Jason & Nikki Prunick
Barely a lawn, let alone a garden, existed when the house was purchased in 2002. That first year only a row of petunias was planted along the sidewalk. With the help of many gardening friends, the garden quickly grew. In the spring red tulips, planted by their great-grandfather, brighten the yard. They have managed to deter the deer, which they frequently see going down the street to their neighbors. This is a beautiful yard to see!
“New” Community Garden, on Presque Isle, behind Moosewood Nature Center
With a waiting list every year for spaces at the Marquette Community Garden, located at Park Cemetery, a need existed for more plots. Thanks to the City of Marquette, the new 20 bed garden, located north of the Shiras pool on Presque Isle (where the shuffle board courts were) became a reality. Local residents care for their own area, volunteer to help with maintenance of the garden, and clean up their plot at the end of the season.
